Department of Defense to Cut Spending

Yesterday, the Department of Defense (DOD) released a new initiative that would cut unnecessary spending to save the department 2% to 3% annually. We believe this to be some of the more cheerful news we’ve heard this week – the DOD is typically immune to rescissions when calls to cut spending materialize, even though the department is no stranger to waste and abuse. With the new savings measures, the DOD is expected to cut $400 billion from its annual operating budget. Since September 11, the Department of Defense budget has increased by a whooping 48 percent – exceptional growth Secretary Gates has recently stated cannot be maintained. Previously, we have been disappointed by the number of irresponsible earmarks in the DOD’s bloated appropriations bills, which have gone without scrutiny for too long. We hope the recent proposal spurs more restraint in all department spending, and challenges the ethos that the DOD, though tasked with an important goal, is still responsible for tight budgeting and streamlined operations.
