pork-barrel spending - the broken windows of the budget
While the House leadership is ramming through four bills today none of which was made available until late last night, Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) achieved a small feat on the Senate side to take the haste out of the healthcare floor debate.
He was not able to get unanimous consent on his request to certify that all senators had read and understood the bill (watch Senate Finance Committee Chairman's Max Baucus's objection stating that he doesn't know if senators understand the bill) - but he was able to force a reading of an amendment offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) establishing a single-payer system, with the result that Sanders withdrew his bill after three hours.
We would have loved to see the Senator's push to get all amendments posted for at least 72 hours before any further action go through, but forcing a reading - which according to Senate rules only requires one Senator - will certainly help slow down the process of ramming this monstrosity of a healthcare overhaul package through before Christmas.
