Tax Bites - Gasoline

51.2 %

When you cruise on over to the gas station to fill up the tank, you naturally assume that you are paying for gas. What you don’t realize is that over half of what you pay goes to the government in taxes instead.

The federal government adds an excise tax of 18.4 cents on every gallon of gas. Each state then adds an additional excise tax now averaging 21.8 cents per gallon. Add in local taxes and you can expect to shell out 45.9 cents per gallon in gas taxes.

But it doesn’t stop there. Add in the tax burden for the producers including income taxes, payroll taxes, and property taxes and you are paying a full 51.2 percent of the price at the pump to the government. At the average rate of $2.77 per gallon, the government bite is costing you $1.42 per gallon every time you fill up.
