Indiana Municipalities Lead in Transparency Measures

While the state does not yet have a comprehensive transparency website, local governments in Indiana are taking the lead to place state expenditure information on a searchable website. In fact, Fort Wayne City Councilman Mitch Harper has proposed an ordinance requiring the city to publish a monthly report on spending online. In addition, Allen County Auditor Lisa Blosser did not wish to wait for an edict from the state government to make her county’s finances more accesible. Instead, she started posting online county contracts of more than $300 from vendors. Citizens of Indiana should be questioning why leaders at the state level have not been as proactive about informing taxpayers about government expenditures. Governor Mitch Daniels has claimed that a transparency website is in the works and we have reported that state legislators are rumored to consider transparency legislation when they reconvene – we hope the movement on the local level spurs these lawmakers to move faster!
