Taxpayers in Maine will get a much clearer picture of how and where their hard earned tax dollars are being spent. The Maine Heritage Policy Center last night launched MaineOpenGov.org, a website that not only features and allows users to search and sort information on state and local payroll expenditures including overtime pay, vendor payments and state employee pension payments, but also provides a forum to engage in discussion in the user community section of the site and allows for comments on individual expenditures.
Predictably, the Maine Heritage Policy Center is already getting some flack from the Maine State Employees Association for posting state employee salary information. But let's face it - this is public information, and taxpayers who pay for these salaries and any other expenditure deserve to be able to scrutinize this type of information. Congrats to the Maine Heritage Policy Center.
