While no efforts have been made at the state level to increase spending accountability, our friends at the Pioneer Institute are not waiting around to let the light shine in on state finances. They have launched their own spending portal, MassOpenBooks, that tracks state employees' salaries and disbursements by the state. The site allows taxpayers to compare expenditures by vendor or fund or sort through expenses by category, appropriation, vendor, fund or department. Information is currently only available for the first two months of 2009, but the Pioneer Institute expects to update the portal soon.
