Our friend Ken Braun, who runs the Mackinac Center for Public Policy’s transparency project, Show Michigan the Money, issued a press release detailing the success their efforts have had in getting school districts online and accountable. To date, 67 school districts have posted their check registers online – which, according to the press release, averages to 1 in 5 Michigan public school students attending a school in a district where this information is available. Ken has worked hard to bring accountability to the Wolverine State, a battle that has been no easy match, and we are glad to see his hard work is paying off.
This news comes on the heels of an amendment that was passed to a school aid bill that requires public districts to disclose more financial information on their websites. The amendment was sponsored by a freshman legislator, Rep. Tom McMillin, so hopefully this signals that a new wave of leadership interested in promoting transparency and accountability is surfacing in Michigan.
