Gov. Chris Christie made spending transparency one of his first priorities upon assuming office by signing an executive order to create a searchable online database for government expenditures. In doing so, the governor adopted the "Transparency in Government Act" sponsored by Sen. Joe Pennacchio and long supported by CFA as an executive order.
While the Corzine administration launched a severely limited transparency website on its way out earlier this month, the executive order promises to provide New Jersey taxpayers a greater level of transparency and will likely make it easier for the legislature to pass the Transparency in Government Act statutorily.
The fact that this was one of Gov. Christie's first orders of business makes us hopeful that this was just one of many steps towards greater accountability in New Jersey, something the Garden State sorely needs.
