In California's budget standoff, the Taxpayer Protection Pledge continues to be the last line of defense for taxpayers. While tax and spenders have been trying to pass a tax-hiking budget for weeks, Pledge signers ( all Republicans with the exception of one) are holding the line, saying there is not enough emphasis on spending restraint and true reform in the current debate.
Pledge signers, while not a majority in the California legislature, are able to fend off tax increases because the California constitution requires a two-thirds supermajority to raise taxes.
