Your tax dollars at work, according to Bay News 9:

The Polk County school district is giving away iPods to some parents.

The school district is using the device to reward parents of children with disabilities who fill out a 10-minute online survey. The district wants to know how well it's connecting with the parents and how to get parents involved in their children's education.

The district is spending about $350,000 in federal stimulus money for the iPods.

That's happening in a lot of places. Roanoke and Lynchburg, VA got over $1.6 million for iPod Touches.

Thank you, thank you, for bringing this to the forefront. Teachers were outraged by this "carrot dangling" scheme for parents to be a participant in their child's education. This is only one of many, many, issues in this county!

I am a teacher in Polk County, Florida. This whole idea was "NUTZ". Teachers here haven't received a raise in two years, and they wanted to invest $350k for ipods!?!...I don't like Federal involvement in "local" affairs, but this whole idea shows the REAL priority/value @ a local/state/fed. level of the worth placed on teachers.

Now, that's what I call quality government spending. I mean seriously, parents shouldn't just complete surveys because they want to help their children get a better education. I mean really, we have eternity to pay it back right?.......... I just don't get it? Have some Apple Lobbyists been bribing government officials, or is the government really this stupid.

The money being used was not from the stimulus package and that programme itself has been withdrawn. 'Correction: Wednesday, Bay News 9 reported that our newspaper partners at the Ledger said it was federal stimulus money that was paying for the iPods. Thursday, the Ledger ran a correction saying the money is for programs specifically aimed at developmentally disabled students and is separate from federal stimulus dollars.' http://www.educationnews.org/educationnewstoday/51545.html

To say that the money is separate from stimulus dollars is ridiculous. I guess I would argue that this is all Tax Payers money. The money came from hard-working Americans and was directed by a marxist leader and now it is being allocated in a fashion that smells of waste, Is this really the road we want to go down? Wake up America!
