Last Thursday, members of the New Jersey Senate rightfully voted to pass SB 708, the Transparency in Government Act. SB 708 will give teeth to Governor Christie’s executive order by requiring state and local government expenditures to be readily accessible to taxpayers on a searchable website. New Jersey is notorious for its overspending habits – public scrutiny is the best means for reigning in the state’s out of control spending by putting taxpayers at the helm as fiscal watchdogs of the state. The Center for Fiscal Accountability is pleased to see that the Transparency in Government Act overwhelmingly passed the Senate proving one again that transparency is an issue that transcends party lines. As the bill advances to the Assembly, we hope that these lawmakers also realize the importance of an open and transparent government by voting in favor of SB 708.
