The Wall Street Journal's John Fund discussed TABOR efforts in Maine and Washington state this weekend. Both states have tax and expenditure limitation measures on the November ballot, and in both states - arguably two of the more liberal states in the country - the measures stand a good chance of passing.
Passage of TABOR in either of the states would send a clear message to lawmakers around the country that tax-and-spend policies are out of touch with taxpayers. Says Fund:
If voters in Maine or Washington state pass a taxpayer bill of rights, it will be a clear sign that even in blue states the public is coming to believe that government spending is out of control and that elected officials can no longer be trusted to rein it in. That's a message that will likely reverberate in Congress regardless of who wins in the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races.
